Default 1973 25hp Johnson Sea Horse

    Hello everybody,
I just purchase this nice little guy that'll be going on a 14' lund yesterday. Here's the story behind it: The owner before the PO had it in his basement for 20+ years just sitting there collecting dust basically. It was setup for a pontoon boat with steering and everything set up. Then the guy I bought it from bought it from that guy two years ago and had the thing completely gone through and had it setup to be a tiller and had everything replaced so he could put it on his duck boat. So in the last 2 years he's used it about 8 times he said so the motor seems to be like new. I ran it and it fired up on the second pull from being cold and it idled great. This thing is a solid motor and I cant wait to get it on the Lund. He had it on a 14' duck boat and said it went about 35 mph so this things gonna fly. Especially for a little fishing boat like that. Oh and one thing I forgot to cover is he painted the hood of the motor green so it'd match his duck boat. I'm wondering if I should even bother painting the hood white again and if I do what steps should I take when painting something like that? should I sand it down, prime it and paint it white or should i just prime over the green and then paint it white. let me know your thoughts folks I'll post some pictures in a couple minutes. thanks

Looks like an easy job to put in back in it's original color. Such high rep motor deserves looking good. I own a 6 hp of the same year and the original "metalic olive green" has been hard to find in my area. Good luck.
a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work ..

thanks pecheux. I plan on eventually getting it back to original but for now I'm just gonna run it for awhile.

I have had amazing luck stripping aftermarket paint off original paint with citrus stripper.
This was on bikes but one had several coats of green over cream and the factory paint was completely unaffected by the stripper.

I'll have to keep an eye out for it. That would cut my job in half because I wouldn't have to paint it again
