Default Wiring for Magnito - Mercury four (1959)

Having trouble maintaining spark in magnito. The engine "rolls" but won't comtinue to run. Where can I get the wiring diagram or repair manual for this engine. The magnito has "4D-4" and "0964" stamped on it.

Thats a Kiekhaefer mag. try disconnecting the kill wire to see if it's a mag. or wiring problem Merc.manuals are still available-new and on ebay
Poor advice is worse than no advice, your guess or inept answer can cost both money and time, so if your just talking, try thinking first.

Hi Desertsgt, Have you pulled the magneto off at all? It comes off in a neat little package, completely self-contained. Make sure the points are clean and gapped at about .008". Make sure the rotor and cap pickups are clean and free of corrosion. You can bench test the magnetos two ways. First is with the cap and cover off. Hold the mag body against a bench vice, holding the coil lead about 1/2 inch away from the vice. Spin the magneto over clockwise (from the mounting base end). Spark should jump that half-inch gap. Second, with mag reassembled, line up the spark plugs in the vice, hold the mag body against the vice and spin it over. Should get spark in all four plugs in rapid succession. The 1965 and prior Mercury Manual is quite detailed in setting up the magnetos. It's a good system when done correctly...- Scott
