Default Water pump 115 HP Mercury 1996

I was having very little water coming out of the pee hole so I replaced my impeller with a new kit and now no stream. I cleaned out the tube by blowing air back through the inlet, nothing.Dropped the LU again to recheck the installation of the pump but could not find a problem. Is there a tube on top of the impeller housing that inserts into the pick up? On muffs, I have a lot of water coming out of the front of the LU.Any suggestions? No over heating problems.

You probably didn't get the tube you mentioned properly inserted. You need a tube (roughly 1/2" copper....used to be anyway) that comes from the water pump outlet and is supposed to stick into a hole (with gasket) in the top end of the midsection. If you didn't stab it, or if it is bent or otherwise damaged you will do as you are doing.Mark

Mark, thanks for your reply. The only tube on top of the pump housing is a 1/2" nipple built into the housing. No gaskets, no seals on or around the nipple. It looks like this inserts into the water inlet tube when the LU is lined up. I looked at the inlet for this tube and did see what appears to be a stationery rubber grommet. It seems to me there should be an extension on top of the pump housing nipple that would slide into the inlet water tube. I looked for same thinking perhaps it fell off when I dropped the LU but no luck.PerplexingÂ….

This engine has operated flawlessly with no overheating. I have always had a steady stream on a garden hose or in the water until the last time out on the water I noticed the stream was not up to par that's when I installed the new impeller kit. Now, no water coming out. I need help from the experts on the forum please so I can put this back together today if possible. Thanks,Dead in the water......

there is a short nylon tube with orings that connects the metal housing with the copper water tube, make sure its in place or no water to the powerhead.
no tech questions by PM, they wont get answered.

The impeller housing looks like it's made out of aluminum. The nipple on top did not have a short nylon tube when I dropped the LU. I looked up inside the mid section where the nipple would insert and can see a rubber bushing. Did this get hung up when I dropped the IU? Should I remove the bushing and attach same to the nipple on the impeller housing then install the LU? Did not see any O rings. They did supply O rings but I did not see any O rings when I removed the impeller.By the way, i see you are from Kitty Hawk, i am in Charleston and planning a trip to the outer banks, should I bring the flats boat? Provided it's able to get "under way" and most importantly "make way".Thanks for your help.Justin

Haven't found the answer to my pump problem. I hate to drag it down to the dealer for a simple no brainer impeller but it looks like I don't have a choice.Any suggestions before I take it to the dealer?Justin

Get a ruler and measure the distances from the water pump to the hole in the upper midsection. If you come up short something is missing. Now where it went, who knows but you have to have a solid connection between the pump and the midsection to get water up there. It's the only way it gets there.Mark

Thanks Mark for your reply. Good suggestion on the measurement and I agree, there has to be something to connect the two. My previous post mentioned... "I looked up inside the mid section where the nipple would insert and can see a rubber bushing. Did this get hung up when I dropped the IU? Should I remove the bushing and attach same to the nipple on the impeller housing then install the LU?"Could that be the case? Is that the "Missing link" between the impeller housing and the pick up tube inside the mid section? Thanks,Justin

Looking on the Doug Russell site it does appear to show the bushing actually sitting attached to the top of the water pump asm. Maybe you need to reach up and pull the bushing off the water pipe and reinstall it on the water pump Doug Russell

If the coupling is still attached to the water tube it may have been pushed further up the tube during the last installation of the lower unit. Also, not having the pump aligned so the nipple and coupling align may have pushed the tube to the side so alignment is now not possible. Some alignment checks need to be made. Check side-to-side position of the water tube and the distance from the coupling to the mating surface of the mid section. Then measure from the bottom of the nipple to the mating section of the lower unit. If these dimensions don't allow for nipple insertion into the coupling, the tube has been pushed out of position.

I pulled my lower unit last week. I suspect it needs some repair. Then I put it back on - just for "practice". As mentioned, aligning the water tube wasn't easy. Nor was it all that difficult. Later, I pulled the LU again, so I could take it into a shop for diagnosis/repair. I found that a piece of automotive heater hose would slip on to my outlet tube ( that goes up to the engine). I rigged that hose to my garden hose & turned on the water 'til the telltale was flowing nicely. This would also be an easy way to help diagnose your problem. If a water hose hookup doesn't give you a good telltale, your problem is "upstream" (plugging). If it does flow - then it's likely that your problem lies with either the impeller or the connection.

Pulled the LU off for the third time. This time I took the rubber bushing out of the tube and siliconed it to the top of the impeller housing. I let this set with a weight on it for a couple of hours. Used Vaseline on the inside and outside of the bushing. Lined up all the studs , drive shaft and shifter. Bolted it up snug. It pees like It just got back from the urologist! Thanks guys for your help and encouragement. Very refreshing not to get put down for asking questions. Replacing an impeller is about a 3 on the difficulty scale until something doesn’t ‘t go right. Nice to have this forum to bounce ideas around!Best regards,Justin

The first time you drop the lower unit for maintenance is always a learning experience and the most fun. After that it becomes routine.
