Default Timing a Mercury 400 engine

Just to let everyone know what I think I learned in the past three days, 3 weeks, & 3 months of working on this motor.#1 I think it is easy but it took me these three days to understand the book. OK here is what I did.Remember I am doing this in my basement without the motor running.1. Hooked up remote control cables. Biggest reason for not understanding how to do this.2 Put shift lever in neutral position.3. Adjusted trigger coil to approximately middle of bracket. Spark advance arm is about in the middle of travel.4. Checked timing with timing light. 2 dots appeared in the window just like the book said it would.5. Moved throttle advance on remote control unit all the way forward to simulate maximum throttle.6. Checked again with timing light and solid white line appeared in the window just like the book said it would. It is off a little but I assume this is because I am not runing the engine.Don't know who the guy is that said. "Read the Book" but that is what I did until I understood what I was reading. Thanks again for all your help.roger2
