Default Tach not working battery not charging

1987 Ranger with 150 XR2 Merc. Had to replace big motor battery and accidently crossed the leads, sparks went flying. Fixed in a panic and thought all was well. Fired up boat with the muffs on all good. Took out to lake and noticed tach was not working. Buddies told me I probably fried the stator and should check output voltage to the new battery (they said tach would not work with stator problem also). Battery read 12.56 motor not running. Battery read 12.47 with motor running. So I pulled stator thinking no brainer but read in this forum might need to ohm it out as they are costly. I ohmed it out and it looks good. Trying to think what other componet would knock the tach out and not charge the battery. Thanks for any suggestions...!!!

Don't know if you have one, but when my tach isn't working it's the rectifier.

Yep, starboard side on the switchbox mounting plate. It was dead before the sparks were visible.

It's also possible you got the oil alert module. If you hear the power on beeps, it's OK.

Thank You Gentleman, do you think the stator could be ok if I get the rectifier fixed/replaced? Thanks Again..!!

It's very probably a large fuse, used to protect from doing just what you did. I'd run that down before tearing into anything else ...

The fuses were the first thing I checked before pulling the stator. All good, what was odd was that when I arcked that battery none of the BIG in-lie to the battery fuses popped or had to be reset. Thought thats exactly what they were for..!! Going to replace the rectifier and remount the stator and give it a whirl. Next stop lake......or my outboard motor mechanic. Thanks Fellas..!!!
