Default Alignment of shift rod and splined shift shaft to lower unit

    1987 MERC 35 HP SN #177596

I have taken apart and successfully re-assembled several of these lower units without any difficulty, but this time something different happened. As I returned the engine from the full tilt position to the down position, the part shown in the photos fell out from the drive shaft housing onto the garage floor. This part is to help align the shift rod and splined shift shaft during re-assembly.

There are no tell tale marks or part no. on this part IMG_2405_1.JPGIMG_2407_1.JPGto indicate the correct way to re-insert it into the housing and it does not appear or is mentioned in my Merc manual specific for this engine. Also I could not find any info on line. My question is this:

Which end should be inserted into the drive shaft housing? As shown in photo"A", or as shown in photo "B"?

    Thanks,

    John

No, that is the guide for the reverse lock rod and it fits up into the leg and the reverse cam is on the splines on the LU shift shaft.

The guide is item 50 in this link:

    Gerry,

Thank you for directing me to the proper link to identify my part in question.

Now, based upon the pictorial in that link, would you say that the part should be installed into the drive shaft housing as shown in the pictorial??

    Thanks,

    John

Pic A is the correct way to install into driveshaft housing, after install when you look up into housing you want to see the flat bottom of it...
