Guys, I've got a '69 merc 9.8 that has all the kill switch wires taken off of it. I have a junk 7.5 merc that I can rob the switch off of, but I have no idea how a single wire kill switch works because it's disconnected on the 9.8 also. The only thing I can think of is that when you press the switch, it grounds something to the belly pan. I have had some good help on another forum but can't "seal the deal" because I don't understand fully what's going on. I can send pics if needed, but I know some of you mercury guys can probably solve this with your eyes closed.
Lastly, could I just use a hardware store push button switch and wire it up so that pushing the button shorts across the points? I see a location near each point that I could hook a wire up to. Would that possibly be the better solution since the darn old 7.5 switch could be bad, too?
Thanks,
JBJennings
All pre CD twins are killed by the switch shorting the points together. There should be 2 wires coming out from underneath the stator that go to a small plastic block on thee side of the engine, just run 2 wires from them to a 2 wire switch
