1997 Mercury XR2

I recently purchased a bass boat with a Mercury XR2 150hp, I had just started to look around the engine and found a cable coming out of the lower unit, it looks like it's been cut, what is this for ?

Need a picture. Wire color? Don't know what ya got for sure but last year for a PRODUCTION XR2 in outboard form was '87. Maybe XR6? There is a yourapeein' high performance XR2 that is a pretty rare animal hear in tha States....................

Like Dukedog said a picture is needed, but are you sure it's a cable and not tubing?? If it's a piece of tubing it's most likely the speedometer tubing. I've seen plenty of then just hanging.
