1997 mercury 9.9 need impeller

hey guys i need to put an impeller in my 1997 mercury 9.9 i tried to tear the lower unit off today but was unable to get it all the way off i removed all three bolts i could find it dropped down about an inch then stopped I'm thinking i have to some how disconnect the shifter linkage but there's no way to do it that i can see i have a seloc manual but its pretty much worthless thanks for any help you guys can provide

What is the s/n or at least if it is a 2/4 stroke?

For the problem you are having trying to disconnect the shaft, look under Section 6 Lower Unit and you will have the procedure for changing the impeller.

With everything undone at the moment as you have it, read page 6-8 to see how to remove the shift shaft retainer and the reverse lock actuator.

Thanks for the help. ... I have a 96' 9.9 and ran into the same issue today.
