1988 9.9 mercury-short shaft

i am replacing water pump,i have lower unit loose but it will only move about two inches,i also have carb off.im am unable to understand how to remove shift linkage.i have service mannual comming by thur.................i also am interested in anybody that has used an extension for short to long bottom end.i can purchase one new for 125.00 old semperfi

I have an 84 9.9 and I think my linkage has a pin and clip under the carb, I didn't have to remove the carb though.
