1982 Mercury M50 wiring material inquiry

Hello All -
We just picked up a new toy for our boys to play with in the bay.
1974 13'4" Whaler with 1982 50hp Merc OB, 4 cyl, 2 stroke, remote controls.
Takes me back to the days I caught the boating bug!
I noticed unusual wiring (inside and outside the motor) upon purchase, but sometimes a deal is to good to pass up!
Immediately changed out the original fiberglass fuel tank and rebuilt carbs to be safe - ran great for many days.
last run, the wiring acted up and burnt after the longest and highest RPM run.
i have a Seloc manual which contains wiring diagrams, however the manual contains no information regarding wire material to use with the wiring diagram info.

My question: Where can I access wire gauge and type information for the rectifier, stator, and cranking motor systems??

I feel like a tourist posting this thread....have never done it before, hope I have provided sufficient information!!!
