    Default 1980 40H.P. MERCURY

HI GUYS, yesterday i bought a 40 hp. merc from a friend of mine for $50(i figured i couldn't screw up too bad) . it seems to be in descent condition except the top cylinder has no compression and some of the wires from the power pack are corroded real bad. i was looking for some good pointers before tearing this thing down seeing as how i haven't much experience with mercury. any suggestions would be helpful. THANKS, LIKEAROCK

Not much out of the ordinary,Chevy, except if you hadn't gotten the book yet, get the CLYMER shop manual. It covers those very well. Also, tear into it from the intake side, and inspect the reeds real good first. Then (if I was doing it), I'd pull off the head gasket to look at the bores and pistoncondition. You cant go wrong at the price you got it for, that's for certain. Good luck with the project.
