Question 1978 140hp Mercury water pump needs changing

I'm about to buy a 1978 merc. 140 hp and was told it needs a water pump replaced and it costs about $30.00. Is this price correct? Is it fairly easy to change these yourself or do I need to take in to a repair shop..
Any help would be awesome. Thanks for your time, Chris Bartelt

The price quoted is about right for just the impeller, which pumps the water. There may be a few other gaskets and seals you may want to replace as part of the job. Invest in a manual and you can do the job if mechanically inclined. You can get a diagram of your water pump at any number of online sellers of merc parts. Good luck.
