Default 1976 Mercury 500 50 hp flywheel key replaced now timing points needs to be done.

My motor would not catch even when I was sure fresh gas was running though the carb. So I new the timing was off. This happened to me before so I had a look at the flywheel key and shure enough! sheared!

Replaced that flywheel key and the timing belt while I was at it. Now comes the problem . I don't now how to time it!

This guy luke told me take out the spark plug in cyl# 1 and put your thumb over it and at it's maximum compression......................
now I don't know what to do and luke is long gone! no manual and a fishing trip coming up fast!
What next can anyone explain this to me?
