    Default 1974 Mercury 20 Hp

I have some questions and Im not quite sure where to put it since they changed the board. I just acquired a 20 hp Merc 1974 and I want to restore it. It runs perfect just like new. I need to know where to get complete decals for it and what kind of paint to use so that it doesnt come off in the water. Also, If schematic is still around, and if you read this, Can I please get a color code for the wiring, like a diagram that breaks down wires by color PLEASE?

You posted in the right place, Nathan. Please get yourself a manual. If you try to work on your engine without one you have a foolish mechanic.Your manual should provide color coding. There are lots of guys here willing to give you advice and help, but we can't be your Service Manual.Let us know how else we can help.Good luck.

Hi Nathan Painting Mercs is way simple. Black. I just use krylon black enamal. Sand down the ruff spots, prime the bare metal with zink cromate primer and paint it black. Unless the decals are realy shot or faded badly, just mask them off and paint around them.

Hi Nathan, As Alcan noted, Mercs from the 1970s are easy. Buy your bet black and go from there. I like acqylic lacquers, but some guys prefer enamels. Try a test spot first, douse it with some fuel and see if it stays. If it wipes off with the gas, or bubbles, try something else. As for decals, you're not likely to find a new set at your local dealer, and to my knowledge no one is reproducing them, so you'll probably have to take what you have to a print shop and have them cut some in vinyl. If they're good, you won't be able to tell the difference from 5 feet...- Scott
