Default 1967 Merc 650 _ SL? or EL?

I looking at possibly purchasing a 67' 650 Merc (serial number verified). What I am not able to assertain is weather or not it is an SL or and EL (EL having the alternator, which I would prefer) Is there a place to look for the Model number? It was not buy the serial number that I could see. And I did not see what I would believe to be an alternator so thinking its an SL. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

It's a E engine no CD engines were built with out a alternator but I can't tell the shaft length to tell you if it's a L.

I found this on the Old mercs site saying that it offered both w/ and w/out the alternator in both short and long shaft models, and I was going by this for my information.

    Quote "
    General Information:

This model was painted all "Phantom Black."
The serial number was on a plate riveted to the swivel bracket above and between the clamp screws..
Serial numbers 2119749 thru 2309310 were 1967 models.
Serial numbers 2309311 thru 2452709 were 1968 models.
Serial numbers 2503991 thru 2803561 were 1969 models.
1967 & 68 Merc 650's were produced as Merc 650S (Electric Starting, Short Shaft, without Alternator), Merc 650SL (Electric Starting, Long Shaft, without Alternator), as well as Merc 650E (Electric Starting, Short Shaft, with Alternator) and Merc 650EL (Electric Starting, Long Shaft, with Alternator).
1969 Merc 650's were only produced as Merc 650E (Electric Starting, Short Shaft, with Alternator) and Merc 650EL (Electric Starting, Long Shaft, with Alternator). "

Where on the motor would the alternator be? The starter is in the one picture but I did not see the alternator. What does the alternator look like on this motor? The model number must be somewhere.......

Sorry, I did'nt think this was service question. Here is a another photo.

Your question was asked in the right place, this is the open forum. The engine model is a 650-4. The alternator is under the flywheel with 2 yellow/red wires running to the rectifier. CD stands for Capacitor Discharge, this engine has battery powered CD and has to have a alternator to function properly. You will need to measure the distance from the tramsom clamp to the cavition plate to see if the engine is a L, L engines are about 21-22" and standard are around 16-17".
