Default 1965 Mercury 350 ignition woes

I'm working on this motor. Owner brough it home and it had spark , he decided to let his dad re-wire it. I had a look at a wiring diagram online and it corresponded to the keyswitch colour codes which tells me its a 65. His dad ran it the same as the PO had it wired and they said it melted a wire going to under the powerhead when they tried to start it. There are 2 wires, assuming they are the ground wires to the points. I'm used to working on OMC's, are these Merc's any different. Something tells me putting power to these wires fried components under the magneto. Any advice welcome.

A 1965 merc 350 didn't have any points. It was a magneto motor.
Here is a link to the wiring diagram

Um, what are those 2 wires connected to under the flywheel????

    According to Mercury used 2 x 398 2202 breakers and 2 x 398 2203 condensors.

Fixed, used mint condition mag plate with good points, condensors and coils fixed it, runs mint now.
