    Default Stater/Solonoide Problems???

Hi,I went boating today and my boat got flooded. I turned the motor over like 25 times in a row trying to start it. Now when I start it turns the motor over for like 1/2 second then it disingages and the starter spins free. Can someone please tell me what the problem is?Thanks,Ben Hunter

That's not an outboard, Ben. It is an I/O (Inboard/Outdrive).I will move this to the I/O Forum.

The 10 amp setting is for a quick charge.Considering all the water problems you encountered, plus all the attempts at starting I'd go with caution and use the 2 amp setting. It is the "normal charge" setting.... takes longer to charge the battery but is easier on it.

The problem is not your solenoid, it is the bendix. You can buy another bendix, but it is easier to just get another starter. (When they test it, they are testing it electrically - the bendix is the drive, or gear at the front of the starter).

Ben,your starter motor. Is the motor part below the solenoid about 3 inch in diameter? If so it is a gear reduction type starter.I'm seeing a lot of problems with them.My supplier says the reduction gears are now plastic, and maybe stripping.this a new problem, and when we get to the bottom of it,I'll post here.Anyone having similar starter problems?DHP

I took the cover near the back of the flywheel off there were no teeth laying in side and no metal dust. Dose that mean my ring gear is ok? Also I took the spark plugs out and it turned over fine, that means the solonoide is working right, It is new? I will buy a new starter if I need to but will that solve the problem? Iam afraid I will put a new one on and it will go blum blum berrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, lol. Any Way I hate to bug you all so much but I realy love boating this is my thierd year and it is great. Do any of you go or ever been to Ceaser Creek Lake in South West Ohio? Thanks,Ben Hunter

Another option you might explore is that your engine is trying to start. As soon as it does that your bendix will disengage and the starter will run free. . . . until you turn off the key.So your starter may be OK after all. You did not say how much water got in. Enough to flood the engine completely? Check for dampness in your electrics somewhere. I would start with the distibutor cap, then look at the fuel system. Either of these will let your engine start, then it will die on you because of misfire or water in the gas.Hope this helps.

Oh no, No water got in I did not notice but the throttle got pushed all the way down and I did not notice so I tryed to start it and it would not start. I meant it got flooded with fuel. Also I though what you thought about maybe it was trying to start so I took the wire from the distributer to the coil of and it still disingages. I am going to buy a new starter. Hey Ben,, I used to live in Xenia for 18 years. Tornado got me. I never got a chance to use the new lakje because it was still under construction when I left. Still have kids and grandkids there. Good luck with your starter problem. Bill in TN

My starter did the same. After an intensive use started to make a noise and disengaged. The problem is that the metallic reduction gears run into a plastic exterior gear whose teeth got broken. I could not find any replacement part so I had to buy a new one.I learned a lesson: If you use the starter for more than 30 seconds, let it cool for about five minutes before trying again. If not, you burn it and you have to buy a new one.
