Default Are MerCruiser 470 4 cyl I/O's Any good?

Hi, I am looking at a 26' Cruisers Inc 266 Vee-Sport Sunbridge boat that has twin 4 cly 170 hp Merc I/O's on it. The port engine has been rebuilt with only 15 hrs on it, the starboard engine has 900 hrs. The very fact that the starboard engine has lasted 900 hrs says that these engines will go the distance if maintained properly. Am I being nieve in my assessment of this motor?

Are these MerCruiser 470 4 cyl I/O's - Any good?

    Thanks, Don

Ayuh,.... If you don't already own it,.... Don't buy it......

The 470s were a Bad Idea from Mercruiser,+ they figured that out after only a few years,....
They haven't been built for close to 20 years,+ parts are getting scarce....
    And,.....
A Refit is usually a serious Problem, because the drives are usually installed Too close together to go to a V-motor,+ Larger In-lines are not used anymore either....

Keep Looking,..... There's Plenty of boats out there Without this Handicap......

skip this boat.... and any other with a 470..
just because you found it that way... doesn't mean it's supposed to be that way.

Part of diagnostics is spending time figuring out not only what the problem is, but also sorting through what it isn't.

The older the engine is, the chances of it having more than 1 problem goes up exponentially

Boating has always been a rich mans hobby. Buying a new boat gets cheaper every year, but the maintenance, the repairs, and the overall cost of ownership of a boat has never gotten any cheaper.

One 470 would be bad enough, but two?......
Move on, there are a ton of boats out there.....

I agree with all above. And unfortunately, you see a lot of those in twin applications.

The problem is, what fails on one fails on all of them. That starboard motor is gonna go bad soon, if the port side just did.

Walk away from the boat, quickly, and don't look back.

I believe this motor used a head from a 460 ford, correct?
It was common in a few of the larger Glastron / Carlson twin engine boats. Might check with the guys that own them - there are a few "classic" Glastron forums online.
