at your local mercruiser store...... mercruiser parts for a mercruiser work just like the oem wanted them too...

if ya insist on shopping at the auto parts store for aftermarket parts. be sure and specify marine duty parts..... napa, for one has aftermarket marine duty parts.......

thanks for the replys. i went to the local mercruiser store and picked up a tune up kit and they gave me sierra stuff which turned out to be junk. The point and condenser worked fine, but the cap and rotor were ill fitting and caused all kinds of mis firing. Put the old cap and rotor on and it fired right up!

NAPA sells marine parts. They have a marine catalog that is about 3 inches thick. They can usually get parts for you the next day.

that's disappointing that worked out like that for ya. i agree with lt. i'd take it back too, + myself, i'd whine about it... after reading this board for years. i'm conviced there's a difference in oem parts for mercruiser vs aftermarket. some aftermarket stuff can work ok. but it's been noted on this site before that aftermarket parts are copies of the oem.... there's gonna be discrepancies. some are not relevant, some are.
what i find disappointing is that the dealers, and yes, including mine. are willing to push off the aftermarket. i assume because of price point. if i wanted aftermarket, i'd get it here or wherever. but when i go to my dealer i want oem. that's why i'm there. it appears that in some cases. ya have to be persistent and get what ya want at the expense, + the wait if it has to be ordered, if they don't have it on hand......

Tell they you want OEM parts, if they don't have it, they aren't much of a Mercruiser dealer.

i found the same problem.west marine has all after market stuff.even for the t-stat and gasket i go to the local johnson dealer.he stocks nothing but oem parts.
