mercruiser 120 hp does not reach full throttle

I have a 1986 120 hp mercruiser when i take off it hesitates and then it won't reach full throttle I could smell rubber burning can you tell me what is causing this

How about all the rest of the info?

Is the engine overheating, have you checked for proper timing advance? Is it rubber or blow by gas you smell? Is there somthing wrapped around the prop, is the carb too lean, etc........

Lots of stuff to check thru process of elimination.

Rubber burning smell could be the engine coupler, to replace requires removal of the engine and outdrive and can mean the engine/drive is out of alingment or on a 120.. age.
