Default Mercruiser 120 1970 4 cyl, Lower Unit water pump repair.

Had A marine repair two seasons ago when i bought the boat install a water pump and start and tune the old schooler.
That first season into it about 10-12 hours the pump failed. i bought a seloc that fall and parts offline, and removed and re installed a water pump and accessories implied. The reason the old one the shop installed failed? Dont know the pump top housing was loose finger loose and the stainless steel insert in the pump was wapled around. Had a melt down of sorts. he is no longer in business at this time to get service or even warranty work. So i did it.
Well...the fun was trying to understand the process and after 6-7 tries i was able to bolt up the lower unit to the upper with the prop still locked in a gear. I hook up water to start the boat and see that i did infact get it to engauge in gear. So i pull the control back to the "trottle only" position and the lever doesnt pop into neutral gear now. Cant even start it cause it is in some gear.
I remove the lower unit and try and work the lever to get this upper unit reset to forward.
I cant get anything to move into forward or reverse, so i cant re install the lower unit.
Any advice about this issue i caused, and i can take pics and post them to verify my model and steps or procedure...
    Thanks in advance

    Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,...

There'a Manuals available to download in the Adults Only section at the top of the forum...
    You'll need #1,.. It's a Big file,+ takes awhile...

It sounds like your Controller +/ or the Cables have given up the Ghost,...
    Could be coincidence,.. Donno...

You can disconnect the cables at the switchplate,+ diagnose from there....

I would ASSume you mean the shifter foot on the outdrive when you say you tried to move it. Sometimes to move the foot to align you need to turn the prop by hand.

You do have the remote shifter in forward gear correct ?
