idles great will not plane out

I have a 3.8L 1985 OMC that idles great sounds great and runs great in the no wake zone. When I throttle it up the nose goes up the tack reads 2000 RPM but that is all she wil do. I have had the carb rebuilt, the timing checked, cleaned and re[placed all the filters and screens. I am not sure but have a fews ideals but would like second opinions.

1) Fuel pump cant handle the volume at higher speeds
2) the coil


any help would be great.

Ayuh,... Sounds like Fuel delivery... Fuel pump, or a restriction in the fuel system...

can I put a pressure gauge on at the carb and run it and be able to tell if it is th efuel pump? what should the fuel pressure be at idle and under a load?
