engine stuck, rust and soot in the exhaust ports

no water streams or rust in the manis, the engine only has 137 hours on it and it sat for 5 years. I tried to un stick it and it wouldn't budge so i pulled it today. The manis and risers are still shiney. but there is crud and rust around the exhaust where the gasket between the block and exhaust manifold would meet.

Would condensation from sitting cause this? The engine other than the exhaust ports looks new.

I will post pics in a sec. Also, it is on both sides.

I am going to pull the head tomorrow, but it is look like a new longblock is in my future

did it sit with the manifolds off to me it looks awful rusty where the gasket sits....it may be the pic...also did you try the motor with the drive off to make sure the drive wasnt stuck also with the starter removed to make sure the starter wasnt stuck.....

when it sat the manis were loosely attached, hand tight. i tried every configuration to no avail, of drive no drive, starter pry bar, etc

with the manis losely on and how rusty the surface is and the rust sitting in the valves there I would say that chances are pretty good that moisture got in and you have some stuck rings to the walls...you could try to spray some fogging oil or penatrating oil in the spark plug holes and see if it breaks lose if not you will have to pull the heads at a minimum...I thought I saw some rust in the plug holes too were the plugs out as well?

Yeah your going to have to tear it apart probably....You may get lucky and it will free up with some oil or tranny fluid dumped in the cylinders but your probably going to have to free the pistons and then hone the walls you may get lucky though....good luck

hey harley , sounds like you have my boat . i used marvel mystery oil for aweek , you have to keep checking the cylynders to make sure it hasn't drained out. mine finnaly freed up on one engine but the other had to remove pistons . the problem was the rings froze up after 6 years of sitting everything else was brand new looking. since you have yours out already i would go ahead and just take out the pistons it will give you the opportunity to look the engine over . keep posting your progress and pics

Based on your (rather out of focus) pictures.... ......I'd say that you'll be replacing the engine.

If there's rust in exhaust ports with closed valves, then there's rust in the ports with open valves. That will also mean rust in the cyls.......which usually means another long block...

I agree - that much rust in the heads / valve area.... there's no way you are going to free it up without tearing it down. Once you tear it down you can evaluate it further.

To your original question - no, condensation is not going to do that. Not even it five years. But how it happened is a moot point now - it needs to be torn down and evaluated.

You may not need a new long block but you deffinetly need to tear into it...it looks like the valve covers were on but with the manifolds having a gap or losely on moisture got into the open valves and i bet you would have a hell of a time getting the open valves to seat right and the closed vavles may be stuck.....at a minimum if no water ceaped in to the botom end your going to need to pull all the pistons replace the rings hone the walls and do a valve job and redo the seats.....if water is in the bottom end well might as well do a long block it depends on how much work you want to do and how mechanical you are

Replace the long block. Even if you free it up the rings will never seal properly. You may rebuild it if you choose but the machine work it will need it may just be cheaper to replace it. REPLACE THE MANIFOLDS AND RISERS.
