    Default Circulating pump bad?

1999 Volvo GSI. How often do circulating pumps or their bearing go bad? My problem is that my belt is producing a ton of dust. Everything seems fine, but there is a slight movement in the circulating pump pulley (very slight) and you can hear it if you spin it with the belt off . Not sure if this is normal, or if I am being too sensitive and there is another problem. Last summer the raw water pump was leaking and shot water around the engine for a couple of days, but was replaced.

They do fail on occasion, but the dust normally comes from rusted or corroded pulleys. They act like sand paper on the belts.
New circ pumps sometimes make a squeeking sound.

This seems like a rediculous question, but I cannot tell if the timing cover is plastic or metal. Sounds plastic, but looks metalic after scraping paint off. Can you identify by serial #. Trying to order a pulley and pump to try to remedy by working backwards.

I guess a magnet should stick. Volvo doesn't make things easy for do it yourselfers.
