blew oil line

I have a mercruiser. Today a buzzer went off, and all the oil was out of
tank for the lower unit. There a line with a quik connect, and it came apart.
Question 1 why did it come apart,
question 2 is the quik connect there for a reason
the boat is 2004 Glastron

I'll answer question 2 first. It's there to make removing and reinstalling the engine easier if the reservoir happens to be attached to the engine.
Question 1, who knows why. May not have been connected correctly to start with, something broke, who knows?

I would say fix it and hook it back up and see what happens.
But before you reconnect the quick disconnect, drain the gear lube and check it for metal, water, and condition. A drive problem may have overheated the drive and blown the QD apart.

No water, but found metal shaving. What could cause that? And can you still
drive it. Trying to get thur the hoiliday.
