Default 1997 Alpha one mercruiser outdrive

    Hi guys,

I changed the drive oil in my outdrive on the weekend it has a vent screw in the top and a drain plug in the bottom, I drained about a container and a half out. When I started to fill it through the resevoir hose in the engine bay it took forever...I actually had to pump it in very slowly...I was only able to get about 1 container back into it. When I loosen the vent screw there is no air and the fluid comes out really fast same witht he bottom screw...does anyone have any ideas for me why I only got a one container back in it?

    Thanks

That is NOT how you fill the drive. That method is sure to cause you to buy a new drive.
Read the manual before you destroy things.

The drive fills from the lower hole by pumping lube in till it comes out the vent. Read the full story in the link above.

Also, here is a link to a 2000 owners manual. Very close to your 97...... Read it.

    Thanks Don,

I asked the dealer in our area how to do it and he said you can either buy a pump and out it in through the bottom or put it in through the top which is slow but it works.

Do you think I have air trapped in there? I will read the manual now

I KNOW you have air trapped. Get the pump ready and hook it up to the bottom drain plug. Pull the vent plug and pump the gear lube in till only solid gear lube comes out (no air bubbles) and it will purge the air out.

IF your dealer said you can go thru the top, slow or not, I would NEVER go back there..... He's an idot.

That or you was talking to a salesman, and that shouldn't be done unless you are buying something. They are sales people there to tell you what you want to hear right or wrong and take your money.

Thanks Don, I am going to visit this dealer...Do you think I have air in moniter hose as well? How would I get that out? I allready have fluid in the moniter up the full line.

When I get the pump and attach it I should have the drive in the full down position right?

IF you read those manuals I posted links to, both those questions are answered.
