Evinrude control cables

Hmmm- where to put this topic?

I need to replace the control cables for my Evinrude- the current ones are way to long and don't work smoothly.

How does one measure for proper length?
From tip to tip or just the cable excluding the connectors?

    Speaking of drain plugs...

The lower drain screw on my gearcase ('77 85hp V4) had the magnet tip on it. The guy at the marina said it really wasn't necessary and sold me a plain screw.

What do you guys think? Stick with the magnet tip or don't bother with it?

Chris

    Gear Case FLush

Good morning. I just acquired a 1977 Evinrude 85hp V4. I drained the gear case and no signs of water or metal shavings, but the oil was pretty dark and thick- looks like it has not been changed in a while!

Would it be a good idea to flush the gear case before filling with fresh lube...

    Rebuild or not?

    Hi-

I just acquired a 1975 Evinrude 75hp that threw a rod. Visible damage right now is limited to a hole in the crankcase front, and some loose needle bearings. It happened 3 years ago and has been in storage since then. I guess my first question is, am I going to be able to rebuild...
