    Please help a wannabe mechanic

It seems I can make the easiest of jobs oh so difficult. 96 115hp 2+2 She was running great all summer but then for some reason, she started bogging at mid throttle. Runs great at WOT but when I cut her back to cruise around 3000 rpms, starts to bog like it was starving for fuel. If I...

97 115hp 2 stroke only bogs at mid throttle

Hello all, this motor starts well, idles well and will push the boat on to plane with no problem. It will run all day at WOT. The issue arises when I cut back to mid throttle or lower. The motor sounds like it's about to stall and possibly flooding. If I punch the throttle again, it will...

    Spark Test Question

While troubleshooting my "no spark" issue, I've been turning over the motor a lot with the plugs out and fuel disconnected. Do I need to worry about no lubrication in the cylinders since the fuel is disconnected. The longest I turn it over for is about 5 seconds. 74 50hp 2cyl

    1974 50hp Power Pack?

Hi, I'm not getting spark on bottom cylinder. I used a spark tester and absolutely no spark. Both coils were new last year. I reversed wires to coils in power pack and now the bottom cylinder fires and top doesn't. So, I've proved that both coils and plug wires are good. I'm getting no power to...

    Needle Valve Clicks

During carb rebuild on my 74 50hp johnson I noticed the needle makes a little click when it comes off the seat. It reseats every time and passes the blow test. Is this a normal sound? I even put a drop of light weight oil on the seat but it still does it.

74 Johnson 50hp Link and Sync Questions

Hello all, I am trying to do a link and sync after rebuilding the carbs. The manual says the cam follower should hit the mark when the throttle shaft just starts to move. For this motor the mark is: Pickup location C which is the center of the mark. There is also a note that says to loosen the...

Joe Reeves Slow Speed Needle Setup

Hi guys, I have a 74 50hp johnson that I rebuilt the carbs on. Using Joe's guide, I lightly seated the SS needle valves and backed out 1 and 1/2 turns. When I took it to the dock to make the final adjustment, I started it and she purred nicely as is after I let her warm up. Is the motor supposed...

74 50hp Johnson Replacement Starter Problem

I took my starter to the local auto electrical place and they said they could not repair it. The sierra and arco starters that Iboat lists as the replacement for my 74 50hp Johnson are both 9 tooth drives. The original prestolite is a 10 tooth drive. Is this a problem or will the 9 tooth still work?
