    6hp johnson

Bought a powerhead in eBay... About a 69 model 6hp johnson. Compression decent, a little higher on one cylinder. Good spark in both plugs, woodruff key looks ok, and carb is clean. The darn thing won't crank even with fuel squirted in the carb throat, or the spark plug holes. Really baffled...

    1974 johnson 70hp question

Finally getting back to getting this used motor running on my pontoon. New water pump, thermostat, and other cooling parts installed. Installed a water indicator. Motor is running good and nice and cool. However, not much water is flowing out of the prop hub on muffs. Most is spraying out...

    90's model evinrude 115hp v-4 question

I've cleaned the carbs on the thing. It has good compression and good spark on all cylinders. Reinstalled carbs and the engine didn't run right and idle at all. I sprayed some fuel/oil mix in the bottom carb which feeds both bottom cylinders and it neither sped up or bogged down from too...

1995 mercury 30hp oil injected problems, need help

This motor is a neighor's. He had a mechanic or two work on it and is still having a problem where it just stops running suddenly and won't crank up. It doesn't do it every trip according to the owner. He dropped it off at my house and I checked it out today. It would not idle. I...

could a faulty timer base cause a '72 50hp not to reach full RPM'S??

Just curious. I have been having this problem with this motor for a while, and have just replaced the timer base and cd box and stator just to make this motor more reliable for my dad (all the parts were original from '72) and hoping for max rpm's. I'm going to recheck max timing and...

'54 evinrude 7.5hp bolt up to a '57 johnson tower?

I was curious if a '54 7.5hp evinrude block bolt onto a '57 johnson midsection? I was hoping one would and work perfectly if I change out the intake manifold and cylinder head from the '57 johnson onto the '54 evinrude block. My 7.5hp johnson block is bad and I may have found a '54 7.5hp...

Could anyone recommend a size and pitch prop for a 70hp OMC on an old 24' pontoon?

1974 OMC 70hp outboard mounted on a standard Aloha pontoon boat (not a tritoon) with standard seats and 3/4" marine plywood decking on floor which is also probably standard. I was hoping someone could recommend a prop for this setup. I sure would appreciate it, JBJennings

    Mystery leak... merc 650

Finally got the old '73 merc 650 purring. Using the advice on the forum, the engine is properly tuned and timed, and the carbs don't leak too badly when tilting the engine moderately. HOWEVER, the carbs do tend to leak about 10 drops apiece when the engine is turned off---after about 10-30...

5 fruits in 1 tree---anyone ever tried one?

Saw ad for one of these in the junkmail today. They always look good in the ad! Any of you guys ever planted one? How did it turn out? Pics? Just curious, JBJ

Calling F_R! Johnson 70hp restoration questions

F_R, I know you can easily answer these if you have time, and anyone else is of course welcome to chime in as well! I got a 1974 johnson 70hp on Sunday. I'd like to restore it into reliable running condition for use on my crappie boat. It has about 122 psi on all cylinders and appears to...

mercury 65hp carbs dribbling after running

I've timed this cursed thing with a dial indicator---you guys were right, it was several degrees off. Shocker, right?! Now the danged thing is leaking fuel out the throats AFTER it idles for a while on the muffs. I tried some of my other carbs and they do it, too. I'm figuring...

    Timing 3-cylinder 65hp

Just wanted a double check from the pros: Got piston number one at top dead center by using screwdriver in spark plug hole and feeling for highest point of piston travel, being extremely careful that it was at the highest point. made timing pointer with wire and marked on block behind it for...

Is PWC oil which is higher rated, better for regular 2-strokes that call for tcw-III?

Just curious. I have a merc 65hp from 1973 that is in super condition (I can still see the factory cross-hatching in the cylinders) with great compression I just bought. These motors are prone to detonation and piston scuffing in my opinion. I was curious if it would be pointless to run the...

    What would you do?

Bought a '74 powerhead for my old merc on an auction site. Seller stated good powerhead, 150psi on all cylinders. Returns accepted. Recieved it, noticed the gasket surfaces on the base and aluminum walls were so corroded, there was basically only a 1/2 cm of surface left. I then opened...

What does this part do and what is its position ?

I'm rebuilding my merc 650 3-cylinder and can't figure out how this part (#3 in the diagram--retaining ring) works, or it's sequence in the poppet valve assembly. THis motor didn't have a thermostat or the popppet assembly installed when I got it. The "retaining ring" looks like a tab...
