Chris, I will take your advice about not putting on the new o-ring, but I'm curious, what is the disadvantage of using the o-ring on this older style drive shaft?

History:
The oil in the lower unit was milky, and I had replaced the lower seals a few years ago so I figured it was the upper gear housing assembly...
For the past 10 years I have been trying to solve a problem on a 1972 glastron with a terrible knocking sound.
At first we thought it was the engine, so we pulled it for a rebuild, but the engine was fine.
The engine sounds great on a engine stand.
I have swapped lower units, no change.

SOLVED: Needed Digital Volt Adapter to test the stator.

I just want to relate an problem/solution with a 1979 Glastron CVX SS with 140 mercruiser 3.0L engine.
Symptoms: Low power, bogging down, hard to start, running rough, low RPM at WOT.
Checked spark plugs, cleaned carb, checked timming, checked cap/rotor... No change.
Got a compression tester...
