L1436 Livewell question

Hi all, just bought '04 L1436 Jon boat with Johnson 9.9. Have a question about the "gravity fed" livewell. PO didn't know how to use it, just used for storage. The boat I bought just has a drain hole on the bottom. Is there supossed to be a post or anything that connects to the drain hole? I took the boat out for the first time today, left the plug out and only a couple of inches of water filled the livewell, same level as the seawater around the boat. Once under way, the water drains back out of the well. Anyone know how this thing is supossed to work? Anyone plumbed it with a livewell pump system? Thanks in advance for the help.

That is how it works. Do you have an aerator button on yours?
Just put plug in and fill to desired level.
