Water pump Johnson 15hp question??

I have a 1976 Johsnon 15hp that I just installed a new water pump kit in. When I went to start it it seems to pump water fine through the exhaust hole, but It was also squirting water where the shift rod goes through a rubber gromlet in between the lower unit and upper. Could anyone tell me if this is normal and if it is alright to leave it this way? i did check the lower unit and cleaned the cavitys as well as i could.

Don't worry about it. That water is headed for discharge anyway.

I also ordered the parts to install the pee hole Overboard water indicator and will be drilling and tapping the water jacket housing while on the motor. i talked to a few guys and they said its easier than pulling the powerhead off. Any feedback appreciated.
