I have an older 150 Johnson, the water inlet screen was damaged when I bought the rig, I have the lower unit removed to replace the water pump but can't get to the inlet screen to replace it. Does the drive shaft and bearings need to come out to access this part? Al
I think, but not positive, that the drive shaft bearing housing has to be removed, but not the shaft. No problem removing the bearing housing. Probably have to break the old screen to get it out.
You only need to remove the water pump and the water pump impeller housing plate. You will probably need a new impeller plate gasket.
As F R said, you will probably need to break the plastic screen up to get it out, but the new one will just snap in to place. It is wider at the top than at the bottom so check for that when you replace it.
Sucess!!! Impeller is off, how ever , maintenance and parts breakdown show a square key and the impeller is cut for a square key but the shaft is not cut. There is a machined flat area about where the key would go. There was no key in there, but a carberator float needle was in there to take the place of a key. found a different parts breakdown that shows a flat piece of metal that looks like it would fit the machined area. Mabe this is the one (teardrop) of which you speak. Al
The impeller is not the right one for your driveshaft. The key is #331107 and is made of composite, maybe nylon and the impeller is 5001593. If you want to make a good investment, upgrade the whole pump to BRP part #5001595.
