Default video of starting 1976 55hp johnson first time in 6 years

water.jpgfired it up a couple of times. See videos Thoughts and impressions are wanted as to sound of it running. To me it seems fast, but choke was on and when i released the choke it idled down then picked back up, then choke wire slipped off linkage and it died. Also I am wondering about tale tale water. I know I have seen models just a couple of years newer have a tell tail water stream coming out close to the back of cowl. Mine does not have an opening for something like that.
I was kind of under the impression that water should be coming from the rectangle thing with slots the red line is pointing to in my attached picture. However none was. Water was coming from the 6 round holes where green line is pointing. Water was coming out in a stream at the front right about where lower unit comes together (short blue line) with upper unit, and also coming from under the cover where other blue line is pointing. My other thought is does it have to wait for engine to reach operating temperature for thermostat to open so water will come from somewhere else? Does the engine run rough like this until it reaches operating temps.
Thanks for impressions. you tube links below

Two things come to mind here......The fast idle is normal....Will slow down when in water. If it didn't idle this fast put of water it would stall from water pressure. Second is the water does not look right at all. I have a 76' 55hp Evinrude and water is supposed to come out the exhaust at the prop. Maybe the water pump is not working....

I don't see how water could come out there. I just got thru rebuilding the lower unit and there is sealed exhaust tube from the motor all the way down to the prop. How would water get there? I don't think water is supposed to come from exhaust. My concern is not with water pump working, it is brand new. My concern is the possibility of clogged cooling passages or stuck thermostat.

Take a look at this 77' Evinrude and you will see what I mean. This motor is identical to mine and should be like yours except for cowl.

I watched the video and several others like it. It appears to me that the water which looks like it is coming from exhaust is actually coming from the six holes above the prop. Other than that I did not see water coming from anywhere other than mine. I think I found the cause of fast idle too. a cable was keeping the throttle open. see pic100_5071.jpg

Mine comes out the prop.....not tons of it but plenty. Maybe someone else can chime in here. evinrude motors vary on where the water comes out so maybe yours is different...but I think you have a blocked passage or thermostat. The six holes you refer to is indeed a water exit but pretty sure it needs to have some water coming out the prop.

Well Im not here to argue the point, its just that after rebuilding the the lower unit, and seeing how it was constructed I can't see how water could get into the exhaust, unless it enters it higher up. I know that when I started it. It took a few seconds for the water to start coming out the six holes, and that was only with it running, so water has to be getting to that point somehow. I would like others to chime in here to know for sure if i have a problem. I do appreciate your input. On a completely different note. I pulled off the flywheel to check to make sure sensor was tight, and noticed the woodruf key was sheared.
