Default tiller extension for 1978 Johnson 6horse 6r77

Big thanks to this forum for getting my engine running. It runs great once its warmed up. But the cold start is tough. 8-12 pulls. My arm hurts, Any suggestions? Fresh 78 octane mixed 50:1. Pulling the choke only seems to hurt...any suggestions?I searched for a tiller extension but was unable to find a thread. Thanks for any help. -spurg

My detailed COLD start techinique (55 degress outdoors): (With the throttle on "start". squeeze the bulb until solid, or I see gas in the water)Then: 1 pull with the choke all the way out. 2nd pull with the choke 1/2 way out. 3rd pull with 1/4 choke4th pull no choke5th pull no choke6th pull no choke7th pull 1/2 choke8th pull no choke (it usually starts to run a little here then stop)9th pull - no choke but pull harder since it almost started on the 8th pull...(and then it will stay running b/w 10th - 12th pull)Note: Once warm, starts on 1st pull w/ no choke

Hmmm,OK,try it this way.Full chokePull a couple of times until motor either starts or 'pops'Push to half choke, pull againWhen motor starts, leave at half choke for a bit to warm motor. Finally push choke off. It's possible that your low speed carb adjustment is a bit too 'tight'(lean) Try opening low speed needle 1/4 turn open (counter clockwise). You'd be better off running the low speed needle a bit more rich (open) than lean....Carb Adjustments per J.Reeves:(Carburetor Adjustments - Two Adjustable N/Vs)(J. Reeves)Initial settings are: Bottom high speed = seat gently, then open 1 turn out. Top slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.Setting the high and low needle valves properly:NOTE: For engines that DO NOT have a shift selection, obviously there is no NEUTRAL position. Simply lower the rpms to the lowest setting to obtain the low speed needle va /lve adjustment.(High Speed) Start engine (it will run pretty rough), shift into forward gear, take up to full throttle. In segments of 1/8 turn, wating for the engine to respond between turns, start turning in the bottom high speed needle valve. You'll reach a point whereas the engine will either start to die out or spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the needle valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest setting.(Low Speed) Slow the engine down to where it just stays running. Shift into neutral. Again in segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the top needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back. Again, at that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting. When you have finished the above adjustments, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

thank you. I will try that. Is their anything worth spraying into the carb to clean out the gunk?

xcusme, hey:thanks. LOW SPEED NEEDLE QUESTION:The low speed needle was in the middle (straight down) but when i move it counter clockwise a 1/4 turn (rich) the engine runs rough. When i move it a 1/4 turn clockwise (lean),it runs really smooth. What does this indicate?
