My 1977 75HP Evinrude has started to have sudden (almost instant) power loss but will then recover almost as quickly. Certainly seems to be ignition, not fuel. Friend is convinced that it is a bad coil and suggests I replace all three. Are there any tests I can run before starting to replace parts at random? Could it be the powerpack instead?Appreciate any comments.
I would guess that you have a coil thats starting to break down.I would get one new coil put on the top cyl. If the engine continues to cutout, Then put old coil back on top cyl. Then remove second coil and do the same test. If need be, Then go to bottom cyl.Coils have a habbit of cuting out when they start to warm up. Some times you can find out which one by useing a hair dryer and heating up each one until it starts cuting out.Let engine idel on the muffs.Good luck!
