shifter stuck in forward 1967 6hp evinrude fisherman
I have a 1967 (6702D C551215) 6 hp evinrude fisherman. I have the gearbox removed and it looks good, I can't get the exhaust housing to drop from the engine base plate. Do I have to remove the powerhead to get access to the shifter as it don't have a disconnect plate?, for the upper andlower shifter.

I just went through an evinrude fisherman total r&r over this winter and yes you do have to remove the powerhead to get at the shift rod so you'll need a new gasket.

Hold on, you don't have to remove the powerhead on about 1965-up. There is a shift rod disconnect in the gap when you lower the gearcase about 3/4"
However, to get it down that far, the seal drive pin in the drive shaft has to align with a slot. Revove the spark plugs, then slowly rotate flywheel till pin aligns with slot and gearcase drops down. Then disconnect shift rod and remove gearcase. Note the position of the pin so you can put it back the same way for ease of reinstallation. And don't turn the flywheel while the gearcase is off. Doing that, it will slide right up into place.
You do NOT have to remove the pin from the shaft to get the pump off. Merely pull the shaft out of the gearcase. It will slide right back in.

Thanks FR I sure hope my bad advise didn't cause this guy and extra headache, I did not know the latter ones were that different and mine was an earlier model. I should have know better.

That's ok, I don't know if we answered his question or not anyway. Sort of confusing, he said he has the gearcase removed and it looks good. Sounds like he is trying to get access to the upper shift rod. If that is the question, yes the powerhead has to be removed.
