Replacing a pin on an older model 90HP Evinrude

I'm a newb to the boat scene and am looking to purchase this older used Aries:

After exchanging emails with the owner, I understand it needs a new pin in the lower unit. With a manual and enough research, I think I can replace the pin, but can I get some advice? Am I getting in over my head? What costs am I looking at, and will I need any specialty tools? I have access to a ton of tools from a local college, and I have several gear head friends. I'm confident I can do this at home. But if not, please let me know.

What "pin" are you talking about?
What is the model number of the engine?

the pin hmmm sounds like the clutch dog is skipping or gone and that might be easier just to buy a used lower unit for $200 to $300 still better to strip the old one first to see what real went wrong in there but worst case is a used lower. be real careful the ad says floor replaced and new carpet that should be more of a worry point then rebuilding a lower

With an OMC/BRP manual you can rebuild it. I would stay away from the third party manuals as they are not very good. That engine most likely requires a new water pump if the lower unit is a total loss you can easily pickup a used one and swap it out too. I have no idea what kind of pin it would need to have replaced though.

Needs a little work is not very specific... if the lower is no good it could end up getting expensive quickly.

Agreed, and that's why I'm here. The more I hear, the more I want to keep looking for another boat.
Here's a quote from the owner: "the boat is in good shape the only thing thats wrong with the boat is that it has sheared a pin in the lower unit, and it needs dropped and a new pin put in it."

From what I've seen, replacing the pin also means replacing seals that could cost aroubd $300. Why not buy a used bottom unit?


My budget is $1600. Should I avoid this boat altogether? Any advice on what I should be going for?

Why doesn't he drop the lower and install the pin so people can test it on the water before they buy it?

I'd pay more for a boat I knew was in sound condition as opposed to one I can't run or put in the water...

I agree, and I'm leaning in that direction.
Basically, we enjoy camping, and need a boat to load up our gear in, and head out somewhere. Personally, I'd be happy with an aluminum jon boat. The wife wants a small yacht, preferrably with a personal chef. Just kidding!

We would like something to be able to go camping, fishing, and hopefully pull the kids (and some day grandkids) on skis and tubes.

When the owner says " sheared pin in L/U " stay away from it. This could end up needing a whole new gear case.
