Default Project #1 1990 Johnson 4hp outboard motor (I need help!)

    Johnson 4 hp 2 stroke
    Year: 1990
    Mode: J4RESR
    Serial: B 08439565
    Marine outboard: Belgium

    Issues: Many

First and foremost thank you for looking at my post, i recently purchased the above motor off craigslist.com. When i first got it, it ran okay, had some hiccups but nothing bad. The second time it didn;t run at all, so i got inspired by a friend and started working on it. I put new spark plugs in it and bought a carb rebuild kit, i replaced needle and seat assemble, and adjusted the jet main, and adjusted the float assembly to make sure it was straightl to the bowl or however you are suppose to put it. i replaced the Float bowl gasket, and main body assembly gasket. I didn't however put these weird half looking circle things in because i couldn;t find a place for them. Anyways i took my motor out today and it ran fricken amazing, it had great speed and then 300 yrds later it stalled. I was able to start it up but then again another 300-500 yrd later it stalled again. when i started it back up it kind of putted back up to full throttle then it reached a good speed before i reached shore. I took it off the boat i was using and put it the back of my car, When i got home i noticed it did leak some gas.

Im wondering what else could be wrong? i cleaned the fuel filter, cleaned out the carb the best i could, adjusted what i could, anyone have any idea's? Any ideas would be great i wanna try to be able to run this thing at full throttle for a decent distance without stalling.

I am by no means an expert but, what I personally would do is start with the basics. Test compression, test spark, test fuel. You only need basically those 3 things to fire up a motor. I'm sure some of the experts will chime in and give you a little guidance on where to go from here. GOOD LUCK!
