Primer solenoid wiring Evinrude 225 V6

Hi my name is Scotty from Cairns Australia. What a great forum this is. This is my first visit to this site and I hope someone maybe able to help me with a question I have. I am restoring a 23 Haines and am in the process of wiring up the consol. O notice that on the wiring diagrams it states that the violet with white stripe wire is for the primer solenoid. Could someone explain this solenoids function and where it needs to be wired?, I am imaging I wiring it into the start circiut, (from start button), am I correct? Also the diagram states that the grey wire is for the Tacho, I have replaced the old unit with a new VDO which has apparently been calibrated for this engine does the new tacho need to be earth and also which numer terminal do I place the wire to? The primer solenoid takes the place of the choke plate. It's used during cold start ups. When energized, it directs fuel directly into the reed cages for fuel rich starts when the engine is first started.

The solenoid is generally wired directly to a "Push To Choke" key switch, to the "C" terminal on the switch. When starting cold, turn the key to "ON", push the key in and go to start. Once the engine has started and is warm, you should not have to use the solenoid again until the next cold start.

I am not familiar with "VDO"? Generally on J/Rudes, the gray wire goes directly to the tach's "S" terminal. The "I" terminal on the tach is wired to the "I" terminal on the key switch or source for 12V DC and the "G" terminal to ground (or earth as you all say)

Thanks OBJ - I have fiqured out the 'primer' solenoid - its what we call an electric choke. I have modified the console so I am not using a key type igniton - just switches. Would the primer solenoid be needed here in the tropics with an average air temp of around 30degrees C or are you talking more about the engine being cold as in its first start?

First start Scott.....like in the morning when your first going out for the day. Do keep in mind that over use of the primer can flood the engine just the same as with the older choke system. If the engine is tuned in right, you should only need to use the primer during the first start.

Thanks OBJ - Good on ya mate! I,m actually here working on the boat at the moment and have just fired her up - all good. I am an old commercial fishing skipper and have really only used computers for the usual day to day administration of the bussiness. I stumbled onto this site looking for wiring diagrams, (which one of my deckies showed me how to do). I have never gone onto chat rooms (or whatever this is called) before, as I believed they were only for kids and weirdos. Imagine being able to talk to someone on the other side of the world, who I have never so much as met and discuss technical issues with them and have it all happen in real time! I really am just blown away by this site - it really is amazing. Thanks again

Hello Scott,I live in the Fl. Keys which is quite tropical as well. I often use the primer to assist the engine to start.The carbs are not like an auto which has an accelerator pump that gives a hit of raw fuel when you tap the gas pedal. I think you will find it beneficial to install a primer button. You simply need any kind of push button swithc ,or a momentary toggle to do the job. Wire the swithc between the purple accessory or run wire and the purple white to do the job. You can also use a 12 volt positive ,however I believe it best to have whatever switch you are intending to use for the "RUN" position to also be your power to your primer. Good luck.Mike

There is another cold-start technique that I and many others use. Squeeze the primer bulb until firm. Turn the key to RUN (not Start). Push in the key (choke) and count to 8 or 10). During this time pressurized fuel is being injected into the engine. Then turn the key to Start. When the engine fires, release the key. If the engine begins to slow like it wants to die, push in on the key momentarily to give it an extra shot of fuel. You may need to do this a time or two before the engine settles into a normal idle.
