Default powerhead break in question, '93 88hp Johnson

I just had the powerhead rebuilt and was wondering if anyone had advice on restarting it with regards to a break in procedure (hours, rpms, extra oil in the fuel, etc.) . Is this necessary ? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I could go through the entire procedure, but I would recommend you go through the search tab, enter "break-in" and see what comes up first...If you don't get the answers you want there, reply back to this thread and we'll go from there.

OK, if you are running with a VRO oil pump, fill oil tank with oil. Mark a line where the oil is at in the tank with a thin-line permanent marker. fill fuel tanks with pre-mix (50:1) 16ozs. per 6 gal fuel.First 5-10 min. at fast idle, 1500RPM. Check operation of water pump, strong stream from tell-tail.First hour, get on plane, but do not exceed 3500RPM.Hour2: bring boat up to planing speed and back off throttle to 4000RPM. during this second hour, every 5 minutes, or so go to wide open throttle for a period of 45 seca. to 1 min. backing off to 4000 rpm between intervals of WOT.Hours3-10: avoid full throttle operation for periods in excess of 2 minutes, and vary engine rpm every 12-15 minutes through-out the RPM range. After hour 10: check oil level in VRO tank to see if oil is being consumed.NOTE: If you are using premix only, mix at 25:1 for the first 10 hours, and 50:1 after that period. If verification of oil use is made from VRO tank, refill to mark, and run straight fuel in tank.At approximately 10 hours, retorque Cylinder head bolts after running, but has cooled to the touch. It is not stated in the manual, but for the next 5 hours after this, I never run WOT for more than 5 minutes at a time, until after 15 hours.Prop as needed to acheive approximatly 5800 RPM with a light load at WOT. 6000RPM with the same load would be even better.Hope this helps, and I would recommend a good quality oil, such as Johnson/Evinrude XD-25, although there are other great oils out there, I recommend Factory only oil for the first 25 hours, and in my case, the life of the engine.Good luck!
