The 35 was made in 1957 through 1959. All 1957s and some 1958s had metal flip-up hoods. The rest of the 1958s (Super Quiet) had a metal lift-off hood. All 1959s had a fiberglass lift-off hood.

1957 was red (Holiday Bronze) with white trim. Standard 1958 was Holiday Bronze with white sides on the hood. 1958 Super Quiet was white with a beautiful white, gold and chrome hood. 1959 was all white and ugly.

I believe it is a 1957, but where might I find a model number. Is there one stamped anywhere, and if so what is the location of this?

Look on the rear of the powerhead by the cylinders for a quarter-sized aluminum disk. It should have model number codes stamped into it in addition to a serial number. Some of the codes for Johnson 35HP motors are: RJ-19, RD-20 or RDS-21. Let us know what you find.

You must have already found the serial number plug. Serial number 1628650 is a 1957. Model number would be RD-19 for manual start, RDE-19 for electric start. RDL-19 & RDEL-19 for the long shaft versions.

Could also be an RJE-19, which would be the Javelin model...
