Default Johnson Super Sea Horse-Model 4KL26S/Serial 2414330 Year and HP unknown

Johnson Super Sea Horse-Model 4KL26S/Serial 2414330 Year and HP unknown

My motor: Johnson Super Sea Horse – I think it is a 40HP
    Johnson Motors Waukegan
    Model # 4KL26S
    Serial # 2414330
Spark plug in it is a J4J

The motor has a wiring harness coming out of it with a plastic connection block with about 8 pins.
It does not have any of the throttle or shifting cables. How hard will it be to find these and where is a good place to start looking?
Can you adapt a tiller handle somehow?
What manual should I buy for this?

I read the great post about Waking The Sleeping Outboard which was very helpful but I need to know what motor I have before I start ordering parts.

A little history about the motor:
I have an old Johnson Super Sea Horse that was given to me by my father. He got it back in the late 60’s from his uncle. My dad said he only used it once (back in the late 60’s before I was born) on his uncles wooden boat and it ran great. The motor was given to my father on a 2x4 wood motor stand and has been in the corner of the garage covered with a garbage bag for at least 40 years.
Which brings us up to date…
I am trying to find out as much as I can about this motor to see if it is worth putting on a 1984 19’ Smokercraft Alaskan aluminum fishing boat. My dad said the old Johnson would be great on a boat this size.
The motor has a heavy wiring harness coming out of it with a plastic connection on then end. It looks like it has about 8 pins in the plastic harness.
It does not have any of the controls for the steering or throttle. How big of a problem will this be to find parts and get it rigged up?
I have some photos of under the hood that I took and will try to attach to this post.

That should be a 40 in front of the RK if it is 40HP, which would make it a 1964 model with the 26 in the model number.

ezeke hit it on the head a 64.Basic controls should be fairly easy to find on ebay at TC outboards or at www.aomci.org .I believe it requires a little box that goes on the transom with a regulator and starter relay inside.Of course some sort of dash panel.A tiller if possible would be a major operation involving a different belly pan among other pieces.
Motor will run without the generator. And the motor will crank many many time without charging the battery.

it was top of the line, in it's time, electric start, and generator. yes there needs to be a transom mount connection box with starter solenoid, and voltage regulator. starter solenoid is not that hard to wire, but i know nothing about the regulator.

Wow. That motor looks brand new. My 40 looks like the "before" shot of a diet ad. Yours looks like the "after".

I'd lay even money that once it's wired up, it would fire right off.
The coils are probably still OK due to it being in a garbage bag all of these years, judging by how good the rest of the wires look.

Still need to change the impeller, though.

Thanks for the help with this guys. I rechecked the model number and it is RKL26S. Now I will be looking for the impeller and for the electrical and throttle parts. If it turns out that I cannot find them I'll probably start looking for another outboard. I hope I can use this one though because it looks like it is brand new inside.
    Thanks Again.

That motor is Electric shift. Yes it will run without the generator, but the battery is necessary to put it in gear. And a low battery will damage the clutches. A dead battery and you get out the paddles. As already said, the voltage regulator is housed in the transom mounted junction box. And the shift switch is in the remote control. You need that stuff and it is worth more $ than the whole rest of the motor.

But, dang! That is a good looking motor. Might be worth it. Check out the price of a new one.

Let me know if you think it is worth it…

I checked with the outboard guys up in MN and they said it will run me about $350 to get the “control box” and “junction box.” The Control box is the throttle and shifting controls. This model of motor is electric shift and he said you have to connect it to the battery to shift it. The junction box is for all of the electrical components for starting and controlling the voltage. He said because of the old steering setup (pulleys and cables) it will only turn about a ¼ one direction and turn a full turn the other direction when hooked up to a modern steering wheel with a cable directly to the motor on the transom. He said this is a pain in the rear when trying to load or dock the boat. He said you can hook it up the old way to solve this but you have to engineer a pulley system so it works properly.
My gut feeling is that this will end up costing me much more than $350 when it is all said and done and I may be better off putting a 25-30 HP tiller on it if I’m just using it for fishing. I feel like it would be like a new motor though if I can sort out the electrical and throttle components.
Is it worth putting $350+ into it or should I sell it and start looking for a tiller?
Any input would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

$350 is cheap if you can get it going for that. A new shift switch is $400 without the rest of the control--IF you can even find one. A voltage regulator is somewhere around $100. Obviously he is going to do it with used parts, but it still is cheap. You better grab it before he changes his mind.

BTW, he is correct on the steering too. I'd say this guy knows what he is talking about.
