    Default Johnson Gear Oil

    What gear oil can be used for the fallowing motors,

    61 Johnson 5.5hp
    93 Johnson 88spl
    93 Force 40hp

    You can go to any marina and ask for lower unit oil.For all these engines it is the exact same oil.Just make sure to also ask for new sealing washers.2 for each engine.These too are all the exact same size.
    In principle the lower unit oil is a hyphoid oil,usually 90 weight.

    If you really want to see how the different lower unit oils hold up, Bass and Walleye tested a few of them with interesting results.

    Ezeke, being new to this any new information helps out a lot. As you being an Admiral, this may be old news. I did not read the charts, the article provided me with some new valuable info. Ezeke I would love to hear your input on this as you seem to have tons of experience as a Boater. I appreciate any new info.

    Lower unit fluid seem universal. The key is the filling tube that connects to the fluid bottle and screws to the lower hole on the lower unit. It allows the unit to fill up from bottom up. Once the upper hole drips fluid you know the unit is full without air.
