johnson to evinrude lower unit inter change????

could someone please tell me if I can swap a lower unit from a 3cyl. to a 2cyl??....thanks...

I'll have to get the #'s off the motors,........I do know that one is a1987 60hp. johnson 3cyl,vro..........the other is a 1979 2cyl. 55hp. evinrude ....I think one is a large gear case,.....and one is a small gear case .....can I change the drive shafts????......becouse I think the bolt pattern on the lower units aeer the same????..THANK YOU............

well this is what i was going to do: take your #s and go to http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index....cd2da688b6ec1c

then compare parts and what nots.

if the bolt patterns are the same then the only thing you will have to worry about is the driveshaft......... if it doesnt fit in one end i doubt it will fit in the other.

some of the part #s will be a litle different even if they are exactly the same.... due to the year difference.

some of these guys on here can look at your model #s and tell you right off... i have to do research.

i know you can interchange a v6 ad v4 on many models and they are 2 different sizes and 2 different gear ratios...... so with a little research or the luck of a guru reading this before you do all the research, you should be able to find out for sure.

sorry not much help...... but like i said research..... the main thing to look at is driveshaft and shift rod #s and shapes.

40/48/50/55/60HP 1976-1988
40/48/50HP 1989-1992
40/48/50HP 1993-2005
