    Default Johnson 9.9 1976-1980

I've recently purchased a 1976 9.9 for my sailboat. That new engine does recharge my battery when it is running. Can I take the rectifier and electrical bar from the 1980 and switch it to the 1976?

    Tx

Is that a typo? Are you saying it does not charge? If it does not, does it even have an alternator? There's more to the charging system than just the rectifer. Alternator coils and flywheel to begin with.

I will try to be a bit clearer:

The 1980 9.9 has 2 wire coming out. When the motor is running, if a check voltage I get a reading of 36-44 volts. That motor has low compression on lower cylinder. I will try to fix that later this summer.

I've picked up a 1976 9.9 that does not have any wire coming, this one runs great.

I'm using the new motor on a sailboat but my marina does not offer shore power. I have to take the battery out of the boat and bring it home to recharge. Battery placement and securing device make that operation a pain.

My question was really what is the difference between the 2 engines. What is required to move from one motor to the other if of course it can be done.

There are major differences in those two motors. 1976 had a low tension magneto ignition system. 1980 has Mag CD ignition. So, the flywheels and parts under the flywheel are different. I assume even the crankshaft is different also. Bottom line is forget it...it won't work.

That was my first move, I was quoted $699 for a US64 panel, plus installation. I was looking at other option.

Tx F_R that is the info I was looking for.
