Default Johnson 9.5 Water Pump Question

I was given a Johnson 9.5 outboard SN: M 9R 72M. It starts on the first pull and ran great in the tank except for one problem. No water coming out the tell tale, which is about the size of my thumb. I pulled the lower unit and found the water pump housing had only 2 screws holding it on. I pulled the housing and saw the impeller looked good so I dug into my spare parts and found 2 more screws and put it all back together. Low and behold she now pumps water but only at mid or high rpm and what comes out is scalding hot. Is this normal or is the engine running hot?

Sounds too hot to me, you should be able to hold your hand in the stream of water, if that impeller is really OK you must have a blockage somewhere.

Yikes! Scalding hot is bad. Should be warm at best. I would replace impeller and/or pump housing as needed. The impeller may 'look' OK and still be defective. It's best to replace with new and be sure.

also get a thermostat too and be very carfull getting the housing off because the ears break off pretty easy if u pry on them . also they are right if u went that far just change the impeller and get stainless bolts for the housing. i have a few of these motors and yes the water is very hot comming from the tell tail hole bacause there is also exhaust that comes out of that same hole. but if there was no water come out of there before then change the impeller and the thermostat to be safe.

Thanks Wayne. I have a couple of lower units from some older Evinrudes laying around. I used 2 of the screws from one of them. On your 9.5Â’s do you get any water coming out of the tell tale at idle, or is it more of a mist than a stream?

This is sounding more and more like a water pump. At idle all I get is a mist and it becomes a sputter when I pick up the rpms. I pulled the thermostat while it was still hot and it was open so I think it's ok.

Thanks again Wayne. Once I pulled the thermostat out it started closing with in about 1 min.I called the local shop, he didn't have a pump kit in stock but said he would order one if I come by and pay for it first. While I have the lower unit off I'll blowing air up and down the tubes and stat housing. I was getting a pretty good amount of water out at high rpm so I don't think there's a blockage but it can't hurt.

NOT putting in a plug for anyone--you can get lots of parts from your local NAPA--for the small cost of a thermostat and gasket I would replace it--just my opinion.
