johnson 9.5 1970 starter spring

My Johnson model #9r 70c has a problem with the hand starter. It broke when I fell back while pulling it. At first it would still rewind if I took the hood off and manually moved it a bit. Then after a few pulls it wouldn't rewind at all. I took it apart and found the tip of the spring retainer was broken off. After weeks of eagerly waiting the part came in and I installed it. Now I'm back to the beginning. It will rewind only if I tap it a bit and help it along. Anybody have any experience with this type of hand starter. The spring retainer cost 45 bucks so I'm really afraid to break it.

did you put a preload on the spring? if there is no preload on the spring, it will not rewind properly, especially at the end
