    Default Johnson 4hp Sea-Horse

I just purchased a Johnson 4hp Sea-Horse at a garage sale. The old guy claims he had the motor reconditioned 2 years ago and hasn't used it since then. I only dropped 70 bucks on the motor so this so far hasn't put me back too much money.

The model number is the following: 4972 S
Does this mean that the motor was made in 1972? Anyway, It looks like it has a connection for a gas hose line but no hose. I am assuming I will have to purchase a separate tank and the proper hose assembly with a pump? I should also try and purchase a service manual for the motor before I proceed and just get myself up to speed on it? Or, do you think I should just take it to a local marine shop and get some information from them? Any advice at this stage of my endeavor would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would suggest getting a 3 gallon plastic tank and hose. The hose wil need to have a primer bulb in-line. A service manual is very important if you intend on doing your own maintenance. I would recommend getting an OMC service manual for your specific year and HP. but you could get an Evinrude manual of the same year and it will give you the information you need. Not certain about the year. Grat little motors and run forever on a gallon of gas. Best of luck. Rick.

Thanks. I found a website that told me what year my motor was built. 1972. I found the original manual for the boat on ebay and purchased that. I also found a 3 gallon tank and fuel line assembly from bass pro shops. Here are the links for what I am purchasing. Can you tell me if this is what I need and if it will work or not? Thanks.

    Those should do, eh?

Your doing great. The hose will have a direction arrow on the bulb and the arrow goes toward the engine. The inlet fitting on the hose will need to be removed to adapt to the tank. I have a 71 Evinrude and my buddy a 73 Johnson which I do the work on. Love them. Your engine is always in gear and to reverse it you rotate the motor 180 degrees. You will want to remove the flywheel and check your points and coils but wait until you get your manual. Rick.
